Estos ecosistemas aparecen a lo largo de casi 35.000 hect\'{a}reas distribuidas entre los 1.800 y los 2.800 m. de altitud, formando una orla que transcurre desde el l\'{i}mite del arbo lado hasta donde comienzan los singulares roquedos y pastizales caracter\'{i}sticos del criorome diterr\'{a}neo. En su conjunto, a esta formaci\'{o}n se le conoce como matorrales de alta monta\~{n}a y est\'{a} incluido en el anexo I de la Directiva H\'{a}bitat con el nombre de ‘Formaciones Montanas de Cytisus purgans’ (H\'{a}bitat 5120). El enebro (Juniperus communis L.) es una de las especies m\'{a}s caracter\'{i}sticas de estos ambien tes y en consecuencia una de las que mayor contribuci\'{o}n presenta a la hora de mantener las funciones esenciales de los matorrales de alta monta\~{n}a de Sierra Nevada. Estos enebrales se encuentran justo al l\'{i}mite de su \'{a}rea de distribuci\'{o}n y, en consecuencia, se trata de poblaciones considerablemente sensibles a multitud de perturbaciones. Entre estas perturbaciones destaca el cambio clim\'{a}tico, el cual implica que cada vez sea m\'{a}s frecuente la presencia de periodos secos en los cuales la capacidad de regeneraci\'{o}n del enebro se ve muy mermada, pr\'{a}cticamen te paralizada.
